Citizens of Nepal to decide the fate of monarchy: Menon

Kathmandu, Dec 1 (UNI) Indian Foreign Secretary Shiv Shanker Menon today said India does not prescribe any political system in Nepal, adding, only Nepali people can decide the fate of their monarchy.

Replying to a query about the fate of monarchy in Nepal, he said ''India always wants peace, development and strong democracy in Nepal whatever political system it may embrace.'' Nepal has reached to this stage of peace not because of the pressure or wishes of any country, he said, adding that Nepal is moving ahead with the peace process as per the aspiration of its people.

Speaking at the conclusion of his first ever visit to Nepal after assuming the post of Foreign Secretary, Mr Menon said restoring peace was a significant achievement for the Nepali government and assured that India will continue cooperat for democracy, peace and development in Nepal.

Peace process of the Himalayan nation is an example to the world, and India openly praises it, he added.

Mr Menon,who arrived here last Wednesday on a three day visit, met the Prime Minster Girija Prasad Koirala and other top bureaucrats of the Nepali government.
