Nagpur, Nov 30 (UNI) A thick security blanket would be thrown over Nagpur for the winter session of the Maharashtra Legislature, slated to begin here on December 4.

About 8,000 police officers and personnel would be deployed in the city to maintain law and order during the session, Joint Commissioner of Police S M Syed said.

Mr Syed said 20 officers of the rank of Superintendent of Police (SP), 53 Deputy Superintendents of Police (DySP), 140 police inspectors (PI) and 480 assistant police inspectors/police sub-inspectors (API/PSI) would supervise 5,000 men and 800 women police personnel engaged in the bandobast.

The strength would be augmented with ten companies (about 1,000 men) of the State Reserve Police Force (SRPF), he said. The city police had also formed Quick Response Teams (QRT) consisting of about 200 men and 100 women commandoes, Mr Syed said.

The city police had asked for one company of the Central Rapid Action Force (RAF) to be stationed in Nagpur during the session, he said.

The security cover for the Chief Minister and the Deputy Chief Minister would also be strengthened, Mr Syed said. Security at the Council Hall premises, where the two houses of the legislature meet, 'Ramgiri', the official residence of the Chief Minister and 'Devgiri,' the official residence of the Deputy Chief Minister, had been beefed up, he said, adding that no person without valid photo identification would be allowed entry at the three places. Security had also been tightened at Amdar Niwas, the legislators' hostel here, he said.

Mr Syed said no decision had yet been made on an application for permission to stage a morcha on the first day of the session to protest the recent killing of four members of a dalit family by villagers in Khairlanji in Bhandara district of Vidarbha.
