Three people dead; train burnt near Ulhasnagar-Patil

Mumbai, Nov 30 (UNI) Three people were killed, seven coaches of Deccan Queen train and a coach of a local train burnt and glasspanes of 100 buses broken in violence that erupted in Maharashtra following the desecration of the statue of Dr B R Ambedkar at Kanpur on tuesday.

Talking to reporters here, Deputy Chief Minister R R Patil today said some parts of Osmanabad, Latur, Nanded are under curfew and if necesary, it would be imposed in Ulhasnagar.

One person was killed in police firing at Osmanabad while the reason for the death of another person is yet to be ascertained.

He said one activist was killed in Nasik yesterday when he along with others was trying to force closure of shops.

Mr Patil confirmed that seven coaches of Deccan Queen train were burnt during the day by the agitators after asking the passengers to alight near Ulhasnagar, outer suburb of Mumbai this afternoon. Incidentally, this station is close to Kalyan, a major junction for all the up and down trains to Mumbai.

He said he spoke with central railway general manager, who told him that a crane is being sent to lift the train and soon the traffic would be normal.

Mr Patil admitted that incidents of violence took place in Bhandup, Mulund, Ulhasnagar, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Osmanabad and Nasik but claimed that the situation is coming under control.
