Thirteen police personnel injured in Mumbai: Roy

Mumbai, Nov 30 (UNI) Thirteen police personnel, including Additional Commissioner of Police K L Bisnoi, were here today injured in stone pelting by mobs, protesting the desecration of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar's statue in Kanpur.

Addressing mediapersons here this evening, Mumbai Police Commissioner A N Roy said the 13 police personnel were injured in stone throwing incidents at Bhandup in north-east Mumbai.

More than 180 persons were arrested by the police in connection with the violence and more arrests were likely, he said.

Police resorted to lathicharge at Bhandup, Worli, Mulund, Chembur and some other areas and also burst tear gas shells.

Some people tried to block Eastern and Western Express Highways, but due to the timely intervention of police, the traffic was restored after a few minutes.

More than 100 buses and 40 private vehicles were damaged in stone throwing and arson. The estimated loss in today's protest was around Rs 40 crore, he added.

The commissioner appealed to the people to help the authorities bring back normalcy in the metropolis.

Mr Roy said in yesterday's agitation against massacre of four members of dalit family in Khailanji, police registered eight seperate cases of rioting against several persons.
