Tension in Jaipur's Ramganj Bazar over alleged torture in custody

Jaipur, Nov 30 (UNI) Tension gripped the Muslim-dominated Ramganj Bazar area here today over the issue of alleged police torture of a youth in custody.

According to Mr Mahendra Singh, SP city (North), a mob indulged in stone pelting at the police, forcing them to lob teargas shells.

Police had taken one Anwar Hussain into custody yesterday over a reported scuffle with Bharat Sharma, a youth leader of BJP regarding parking in the city's posh C-Scheme area on November 17. Sharma is said to have been fired at on November 27, sources said.

Hussain's relatives have alleged that he was tortured physically in custody. He was forcibly freed from police custody and admitted to a hospital, they added.

A group from minority community were enraged over the police torture and shut down Ramganj Bazar in protest today.

Tension erupted over the forcible shut down'', although a sizeable contingent of police force was deployed in the area.

Ashok Nagar police station sources, however, said Hussain was taken into custody for questioning and was released later.
