Thane, Nov 30 (UNI) Compared to the rest of the state, deaths due to AIDS is alarming higher in the districts of Sangli and Kolhapur, according to official reports available here.

Addressing a news conference here today, on the eve of the World Aids week celebration which begins tomorrow at the Thane Civil Hospital, RMO Dr S M Tonpe said that on account of migration of people from the neighbouring states like Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, the incidences of AIDS are on the increase in Sangli and Kolhapur.

Dr Ulhas Wagh who is coordinating the AIDS Control Programme in the district said that there were a total of 151 deaths on account of AIDS in Thane district between August 1986 and May 2005 and it rose to 165 by the end of May 2006.

Giving further details he said that there were total of 2,370 deaths in the entire state by end May 2005 including 26 from other states and 4 foreigners. Of these 1023 were Mumbai alone. While Thane, Satara and Sangli crossed 100 deaths there were no deaths in Nandurbar, Jalna, Hingoli, Bhandara and Gondia districts he said.

He said that most of the cases arise in the border areas due to the movement of floating workers and truck drivers who move from one state to another.

He assured that every effort was being made by the organizations to control the killer disease, and as a part of this a week long AIDS awareness programme has been organized.

He informed that the Saathi project for the sex workers undertaken in the powerloom town of Bhiwandi where maximum people from other states like Bihar, UP, Kartnataka, and Andhra live was working effectively and one gets positive results from the project.

One such sex worker who has contracted AIDS along with her seven year old child was even presented before the media during the conference where her entire transformation story was narrated by the middle aged worker, who was abandoned by her family members. Now, she said that she was totally engaged in the education of sex workers in Bhiwandi.

The media was further informed that by end May 2006 a total of 49,753 AIDS cases were tested positive and a total of 3049 persons died of which 2,181 were male and 868 female.

Here again Mumbai recorded a total 3,019 deaths while Thane, Pune, Satara, Kolhapur and Sangli crossed one hundred mark. Bhandara was the only district which did not not record any deaths during the period.
