Police burst teargas shells to quell violent mob in Aurangabad

Aurangabad, Maharashtra, Nov 30 (UNI) Police opened fire in the air and burst teargas shells to disperse a violent mob after seven policemen, including the Deputy Commissioner of police and Assistant Commissioner of Police, were injured in stone pelting by violent agitators, protesting the desecration of statue of Dr B R Ambedkar in Kanpur, in various parts of the city today.

The police were forced to fire in the air to quell the unruly mob at Mukundwadi and Naregaon before bursting teargas shells at both the places, Police Commissioner Uddhav Kamble, who had visited the troubled areas in Cidco locality here, told reporters this afternoon.

One company of State Reserve Police (SRP) arrived in the city to assist the local police, Mr Kamble said adding that he was hopeful of bringing back normalcy.

To a question, Mr Kamble ruled out any possiblity of imposing Curfew in the otherwise communally sensitive town.

The Police Chief said the agitation was being carried out without any leader and police have so far not received any response from the local political leadership to maintain peace in the town.

The Jalna-Aurangabad road, one of the main roads connecting the city to the other parts of the region, witnessed a series of incidents of stone pelting by the violent mob since last night.

Meanwhile, miscreants burnt a Municipal Corporation's truck at Naregon locality this morning, police sources said. Private and commercial institutions downed their shutters in the backdrop of sporadic incidents of stone pelting and arson. School authorities too have preferred to suspend classes as a precautionary measure, police sources said.

Shops in the busy Gulmandi locality downed their shutters around noon when a violent mob threatened them, police said.
