National survey of manuscripts in Haryana from Dec 11

Chandigarh, Nov 30 (UNI) The first-ever national survey of manuscripts would be conducted in Haryana from December 11 to 15 to enlist manuscripts, prepare their electronic database and finally make it available on the Internet.

This exercise is a part of the nation-wide survey being conducted by the National Mission for Manuscripts.

A spokesman for the state government today said the National Mission for Manuscripts, under the Union Ministry of Culture, has released about Rs nine lakh for conducting the survey in the state.

He said the five-day long survey would be undertaken by a maximum of 50 surveyors appointed in each district. He made it clear that the National Mission for Manuscripts did not intend to take away any of the manuscripts, but would enlist these. However, the National Mission would accept any manuscript given to it by anyone voluntarily.

He said the Reader in the Department of Sanskrit Pali and Prakrit of Kurukshetra University, Dr Surender Mohan Mishra, who is also the Project Coordinator for the Manuscript Resource Centre at the University would organise a meeting of all academic District Coordinators at the campus of the University on December 4. It would be followed by a training programme for the surveyors in each district of Haryana.

The Additional Director, Public Relations and Cultural Affairs, Mr N K Singla has been made the state coordinator for the survey of manuscripts in Haryana, he added.
