India's GDP up 9.2 per cent in July-Sep 2006-07

New Delhi, Nov 30 (UNI) The Indian economy showed a better than anticipated 9.2 per cent jump during July-September 2006-07 over the corresponding period last year, propelled by strong manufacturing figures.

The GDP growth recorded was higher than the 8.9 per cent in the first quarter of this fiscal, official figures here said.

According to the figures, the agriculture sector was the only drag, growing just 1.7 per cent from 3.4 per cent in the previous quarter. The sector has a weightage of 23 per cent of the economy.

However, the spanking pace shown by manufacturing sector, which accounts for nearly 15 per cent of GDP, rose 11.9 per cent over the year-ago period while services grew 11.3 per cent, up from the 10.6 per cent recorded in the previous quarter.

India has recorded an average eight per cent growth in the past three fiscal years.
