Sivaganga, Tamil Nadu, Nov 30 (UNI) Huge quantity of explosives, gelatine sticks and detonators, was seized from a car which rammed against a roadside tree near Manamadurai on the National Highway towards Ramanathapuram, last night.

Police said the explosive materials, packed in 30 tiny parcels, were recovered from the vehicle abandoned on the roadside as the driver who sustained a fracture was admitted to hospital.

Preliminary inquiries revealed that the car had been hired by one Mydeen of Uchipuli in Ramanathapuram district to Madurai. The driver was hired later and sent alone in the vehicle with the consignment to Ramanathapuram.

Senior police officials rushed to Sivaganga and the possible involvement of Sri Lankan militants in this matter is also being looked into, police said.

A case had been registered under the Explosives Act and efforts were on to secure Mydeen, police added.
