Declining trend of road accidents, claim police

Shimla, Nov 30 (UNI) Despite a three-fold increase in the number of vehicles in Himachal Pradesh, the number of accidents and people killed in them has shown a declining trend.

According to the data compiled by the state police department, 609 people were killed and 3,499 people injured in road accidents in 1995, while 579 people were killed and 3,632 people were injured in 2,025 accidents till October 31, 2006.

The maximum number of 2,808 accidents occurred in 2004 during which 836 people were killed and the highest number of 1,975 people injured.

During the ten-year period from January 1995 to October 2006, as many as 8,629 people were killed and 47,244 injured in 27,167 accidents in the state, it said.
