K G Subramanyan awarded the Birla Kalashikar Puraskar
Mumbai, Nov 29 (UNI) Maharashtra Governor S M Krishna conferred the prestigious 'Aditya Vikram Birla Kalashikar Puraskar 2006' on veteran painter, sculptor and muralist K G Subramanyan for his contribution in the field of visual media at a glittering ceremony here at the Tata theatre last evening.
Upcoming painters Anant Joshi and Dhruvi Acharya were conferred with the 'Aditya Vikram Birla Kalakiran Puraskar 2006' for leaving a distant impression of their work globally.
Speaking on the occasion, the governor said that the world has acknowledged India's prominence in the field of Information technology, communications and the service sector.
However, India's supremacy in the field of art, fine arts and music also need to be globally recognized.
He reminded that the country has immense hidden potential in the diverse fields of fine art and performing arts scattered across India, and very few corporate houses have extended patronage to arts and artists as the Aditya Birla Group.
Sangeet Kala Kendra, President, Rajashree Birla added that over the last 11 years, the Birla group began the fine tradition of honoring individual excellence in the performing arts inclusive of theatre, music, painting, sculpturing, classical dance in some form of creativity.
She also added that the academy is fortunate to have the Governor of Maharashtra and the First lady as chief patrons for the last 11 years from the time of its inception.
Dhruvi Acharya, a native of Mumbai began her painting career after reaching the US in 1995. She received her Master of Fine Arts (MFA) with a scholarship from the Maryland Institute, College of Art in Balitmore. In India, at Sophia Polytechnic College, she was the the first fourth year student to be awarded the Gold Medal an honor reserved for the final year students.
Born in Nagpur, Anant Joshi has exhibited his works in India, Europe and Japan. He received his Bachelor and Master degrees from Sir J J School of Art, Mumbai. He was an artist in residence at the 'Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten' in Amsterdam, Netherlands from 2002 to 2003 and also received the prestigious ' Prix de Rome Scholarship for work at the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam.
