Durbar to organise sex workers of Jharkhand

Ranchi, Nov 29 (UNI) West Bengal's sex-worker's organisation, Durbar Mahila Samnwaya Committee, has initiated an operation to provide social status to sex workers of Jharkhand and keep them away from Sexual Transmitted Diseases (STD).

Organisation's state co-ordinator Om Prakash Yadav talking to newsmen here said sex workers in Jharkhand were not organised and aware about their work as most of them were of flying nature.

Mr Yadav said the committee would form various groups to organise them adding that two such groups had been formed so far consisting of 24 and 35 members each.

Initially the target areas would be Ranchi, Pakur, Ghatshila, Jamshedpur and Dhanbad, Mr Yadav said.

He also informed about the major projects being undertaken by the committee and said in West Bengal Durbar had been able to uplift 65,000 such workers.

Durbar, which had been working for last 15 years in field of HIV prevention, had also formed a cooperative bank for the sex workers.

He said organisation had built 18 education centres for the children of these sex workers.
