12 Taekwondo players to participate in Doha Asian Games

Bangalore, Nov 29 (UNI) Irrespective of Union Government clearing just two names, the Taekwondo Federation of India (TFI) would be sending six players to represent the country in the Doha Asian Games beginning on Friday.

TFI Secretary General T Praveen Kumar, in a release here today said that though 12 players, including six women, were recommended to the Ministry, clearance was received only for two players, One Coach and One Manager. Hence the Federation took a decision to send four more players at its cost as the country stood good chance of bagging two medals, he added.

Mr Kumar said during Busan Asian Games, the Ministry did not clear the participation of the Indian team but the federation sponsored the trip and sent seven men and three women and Surendra Bhandari won a Bronze in fly Weight Category and Six others reached the Quarter Final stage.

He said that the players were undergoing training in Haryana Armed Police Sports Complex since last two months and all the expenses were met by the TFI and government did not support the Camp in any way.

Following is the list of players: Men: Abdul Mobeen Khan (Fly), Pankaj Dheer (Light), Sandeep Kundu (Middle) and Nakul Malhotra (Heavy). Coach: Rakesh Singh.

Women: Jayati Pathak (Fin), B Varsha (Light). Coach: Theophile Leo Lowe.
