Consolidate gains of UPA Govt, Sonia tells MPs

New Delhi, Nov 28: Noting that the UPA government has successfully completed the first half of its tenure, Congress President Sonia Gandhi today called upon party MPs to consolidate its achievements and to see to the implementation of its programmes.

''Our Government has just crossed its midway milestone,'' Mrs Gandhi said, congratulating Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his colleagues for this ''accomplishment.'' Addressing the customary General Body Meeting of the Congress Parliamentary Party(CPP), held at the beginning of the session, she said that that the first half of the Government's tenure has been marked by many ''achievements.''

Calling upon the party MPs to consolidate and closely follow the implementation of the various flagship programmes launched by the government, she advocated them to ''propagate these initiatives and schemes'' in their respective constituencies and States.

Expressing her anguish at the loss of lives due to bomb blasts in Malegaon, Asom and Jammu and Kashmir and loss of property due to floods in Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and Rajasthan, the Congress President, however, noted with satisfaction that the UPA Govenment had been prompt in extending financial and other assistance to these States. ''Our party workers have been active in relief and rehabilitation and deserve our thanks.''

She, however, expressed her sorrow over the people affected by terrorist attacks and farmers suicides as well as natural calamities and noted that the Prime Minister, in resonse to the plight of farmers, had announced a series of measures to alleviate their distress, including substantial relief and growth package for 31 districts across Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra, where the incidents of suicides had been maximum.
