Kerala and TN to sort Mullaperiyar issue on Nov 29: SC
New Delhi, Nov 27: The Supreme Court today directed the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and Kerala to try and sort out the Mullaperiyar Dam dispute between the two states in the meeting called by the Central government on November 29.
A bench comprising Chief Justice Y K Sabharwal, Justice C K Thakker and Justice R V Ravindran gave the direction in the controversy regarding the raising of water level to 142.5 ft by Tamil Nadu.
Kerala is opposing the move on the grounds that it will submerge large areas in Kerala and the safety of the 110-year-old lime and mortar dam would also be in jeopardy as it may not be able to take the water pressure.
It may be noted here that the Supreme Court, in its earlier judgement, had permitted Tamil Nadu government to raise the water level and dismissed a review petition filed by Kerala.
Today's advice came after Kerala filed an application praying for modification of its earlier order.
Tamil Nadu had filed a suit against Kerala seeking directions from the court for raising the water level.
The apex court had noted that it was a political controversy and the concerned states should try to find some amicable out-of-court settlement instead of litigating.
