Navy holds open sea swimming championship
Mumbai, Nov 27: The Indian Navy once again held the open sea swimming championship, discontinued in 2003 due to unavoidable exigencies, after a gap of two years.
With the Indian navy making all effort to revive the maritime tradition, the championship has been started once again from this year as part of the Navy week celebrations which started yesterday, an official release issued here today said.
The race was conducted from Prongs Reef Buoy to the landing jetty of the Indian Naval Sailing Club, Colaba covering a distance of approximately six kilometers. It was open to civilians above the age of eight-years and was conducted in six categories - Men, Boys, Women, Girls, Veterans and physically challenged. A total of 219 contenstants participated in the championship.
Vice-Admiral Sangram Singh Byce, Flag Officer Commanding-in-chief Western Naval Command gave away the prizes to the winners, the release added.
