Indian Parliament is to be blame for Sharmila's condition: Ebadi
New Delhi, Nov 27 (UNI) Nobel laureate human rights activist Dr Shirin Ebadi today said she was shocked at the plight of Irom Sharmila, who has been on fast demanding repeal of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, and held both Parliament and judiciary system responsible for the situation.
"Today, I went to the hospital to visit Sharmila and what I saw was unbelievable, she will not live for much longer," she said, addressing a press conference.
Sharmila has been on fast for the past six years in protest against implementation of the Act in Manipur, which gives soldiers sweeping powers to kill suspected rebels, with virtual immunity from prosecution.
Dr Ebadi, who is in India primarily to visit the red light areas in order to help in bringing about changes in the lives of the women and children residing there, urged the international community to support the cause.
"Human rights is an international concern and I urge every individual, specifically journalists to discharge their duties in an impartial manner," she said.
Dr Ebadi's campaigns on democracy and greater rights for Iranian women and children, has often brought her into conflict with conservative clerics in Iran.
