Flood forces SMC to redesign bridges over Tapi river
Surat, Nov 27 (UNI) August floods which had thrown the city into a total disaster, has forced Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) to reconsider the design of some the bridges, scheduled to be constructed in the city and to redesign some of the already existing ones.
SMC sources said a new bridge, to be constructed over Tapi river at Amroli area, will be redesigned to allow 16 lakh cusecs of water.
Earlier, the bridge was designed to allow 12 lakh cusecs of water.
Sources informed that SMC has decided to redesign the plan after the experience of August floods. In August, when 10 lakh cusecs of water was released into the Tapi, many bridges in the city were affected.
The civic body also plan to redesign Nehru bridge in order to allow 12 lakh cusecs of water, sources said, adding that the bridge will be closed for some months for this purpose.
SMC has also decided to increase the height of an ultra modern auditorium, to be constructed spending nine crore at Rander zone, the most affected area in the last floods.
