Asian Sports Medicine Congress to be held at Amritsar

Amritsar, Nov 27 (UNI) India has been successful in its bid to host the 12th Asian federation of Sports Medicine Congress in 2009 here, beating number of Asian countries, who were in the race.

This for the first time since establishment of International Sports Medicine Association (FIMS) more than 75 years ago that India is hosting an international Congress in which 46 countries of Asia will be participating as delegates alongwith the resource persons from all over the world.

This was decided in the Executive Committee of the Asian Federation of Sports Medicine held in Riyadh on November 19, Dr Jaspal Singh Sandhu, President of the Indian Association of Sports Medicine and Dean, Faculty of Sports Medicine of Guru Nanak Dev University said here today. Dr Sandhu headed the Indian delegation to Riyadh.

The Congress will be conducted in the month of November or December, 2009 with pre-congress courses pertaining to Arthroscopy Sports Psychology, Biomechanics, Kinanthropometery, Rehabilitation and Trauma. The congress will also be preceeded by the International Federation of Sports Medicine/Asian Federation of Sports Medicine team physician development course and sports rehablitation course.

This Congress will set a bench mark for providing high quality sports sciences back up during the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, Dr Sandhu said.

All the national and state sporting bodies alongwith Indian Olympic Association will be invited for the Congress for giving scientific input to the coaches and the sports doctors associated with conduction of the Commonwealth Games and games at the national level, he added.

This Congress will also host the Executive Committee meeting of Asian Federation of Sports Medicine alongwith the election meeting for the 2009-2012 Executive Board. The number of delegates from Asian countries is likely to be around 200 besides local delegates, which may number around 1200.
