21 injured in stampede at Smokie's concert

Aizawl, Nov 27 (UNI) Mizoram police today said about 21 people sustained injuries during the concert of British music band 'Smokie' at Assam Rifles Ground here yesterday.

While 19 of the injured people were given first aid, two of them had to be hospitalised and one had to undergo an emergency operation, Aizawl Civil Hospital authority said.

However, all the 19 people were out of danger, hospital sources said.

Police said about 40,000 people gathered at the concert venue and the incident occured following the power and technical glitches during the show.

'' Most of the people had entered the ground in time but many entered at the last moment which caused a minor stampede near the entrance gates ,'' police stated.

About 180 police personnel along with hired security forces were deployed to control the crowd, sources said.

The concert was organised in aid of the Spastic Society of Mizoram.
