Spanish rider Galvez killed in Belgian race

BRUSSELS, Nov 26 (Reuters) Spanish cyclist Isaac Galvez was killed in an indoor race at the weekend after a crash, organisers said today.

The incident took place at around 0.30 a.m. today morning 0500 hrs ist during the Six Days of Ghent event.

The final day's racing due this evening has been cancelled.

Media said Galvez collided with Belgian competitor Dimitri De Fauw, struck a railing and lost consciousness. He died on the way to hospital.

Galvez was a track specialist and won a gold medal with partner Joan Llaneras in the ''Madison'' event in this year's world championships in Bordeaux.

He also competed in road race events and in July he finished second in the Tour de France fourth stage to Australian Robbie McEwen.

But the Spaniard pulled out on stage 12 after failing to recover fully from injuries suffered in a couple of falls.

Galvez was a member of the Kelme team between 2000 and 2003, before switching to the Illes Balears-Caisse d'Epargne outfit in 2004. He won a stage in the 2005 Criterium International and another in the Four days of Dunkirk race in 2006.
