Medical degree of Nepal college recognised
New Delhi, Nov 25: The Indian government has recognised the Nepal-based Universal College of Medical Sciences.
An October 23 notification, issued by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, says that the MBBS degree of the Tribhuvan University in Nepal awarded to the students of the Universal College of Medical Sciences on or after May 2004 would be a recognised medical qualification under the Indian Medical Council Act, 1956.
In the light of the recognition, students of the Universal College of Medical Sciences need not take the screening test for the National Board.
Universal Empire Group Chairman "Thamath" K Balachandran Nair said here today all the students of the college, including the first batch of students who completed MBBS in May 2004, were being exempted from appearing for the screening test.
The Universal College of Medical Sciences, which was started in 1998 at Bhiarahawa in Nepal, is affiliated to the Tribhuvan University in Nepal. It could admit 100 MBBS and 40 BDS students every year.
The Rs 120-crore Medical College in Nepal was the first project of the Universal Empire Group in the educational sector.
The group started its second medical college in Agartala in Tripura in August this year.
The Agartala college with a 300-bed teaching hospital has been approved by the Medical Council of India to admit 100 MBBS students from the 2006-07 academic year.
