Somnath releases stamp to mark 125 years of the Tribune
New Delhi, Nov 24 (UNI) Lok Sabha speaker Somnath Chatterjee today released a special commemorative stamp on completion of 125 years of The Tribune newspaper.
Minister of state for communications and information technology Shakeel Ahmed was also present on the occasion.
Mr Chatterjee said media plays a crucial role in a democratic society as a creator of public opinion, a watchdog, an educator and above all as a facilitator of an informed democracy.
''In an increasingly information driven world order, it is through media that the functioning of our democratic institutions receives public attention.'' Editor of The Tribune H K Dua said the daily is the only newspaper in the country which is run by a public trust. It is published from Chandigarh, Jalandhar and New Delhi.
Born in Lahore as a weekly newspaper, it became daily in 1906. It was launched by sardar Dyal Singh Majithia at a crucial juncture of the country's history.
