Pioneer Corps gets Presidential Colours

Bangalore, Nov 24 (UNI) Pioneer Corps, known as the Indian Trojans, was today conferred with the Presidential Colours, a mark of highest respect, sanctity and veneration, in recognition of its gallant services in assisting the Indian Army.

Chief of Army Staff General J J Singh presented the Colours on behalf of President A P J Abdul Kalam to Lt Col R K Pathak. This was followed by an impressive parade, commanded by Col S B Sajjan, the Commandant of the Corps Training Centre.

Gen Singh said the accordance of President's Colours proved the valour of the Corps. The personnel of Indian Pioneer Corps had militarily done the spade work, on which rested the achievements of the Indian Army.

''Your achievements have remained as the most quotable achievements in the history of Indian Army,'' he said.

The Presidential Colours were visible memorials that recognise great deeds of a regiment and a symbol of its spirit as expressed in those deeds.

The Corps, which had a 248-year-old history and had participated in various wars, including the two World Wars, excelled on all fronts like land, sea and air. Formed in 1748 in Madras Presidency, it help infantry to overcome well entrenched enemy behind impassable obstacles or fortifications with their skill and expertise in using mechanical and technical means.

The Pioneer Corps, one of the oldest Corps of the Indian Army, had participated in campaigns in Italy, West Asia, Afghanistan, China and North Africa. It had also showed its valour on many occasions that included wars with Pakistan, the Kargil conflict, anti-insurgency operations and aid to civilian authorities in flood relief, security to Border Road Organisation.
