Mercury dips in Punjab, Haryana
Chandigarh, Nov 24 (UNI) Adampur was the coldest place in the plains as the mercury stayed low in Punjab and Haryana where several areas remained shrouded in fog today.
Fog reduced visibility considerably forcing vehicular traffic to move at snail's pace with headlights on in the morning.
The visibility was reduced beyond 200 metres at Sarsawa, 500 metres at Bhatinda and 800 metres each at Pathankot, Hindon and Palam in Delhi.
The minimum temperature fell to 7.4 degrees celsius at Adampur, turning it the coldest place in Punjab where people shivered under chilly winds as the temperature remained low, a report from Jalandhar said.
The minimum also stayed low at Amritsar, Ludhiana and Patiala but hovered one degree to two degrees above normal at these places.
Amritsar recorded 8.7 degrees, Ludhiana 9.5 degrees and Patiala 10.7 degrees celsius.
In Haryana, the mercury also fell at Karnal recording 10.0 degrees celsius, one degree below normal, while Ambala showed two degrees above normal temperature at 11.2 degrees.
Chandigarh and its adjoining areas were lashed by cold surface winds since last night, further dipping the temperature. The city recording the minimum at 8.0 degrees celsius was the second coldest place in the plains.
Cold climatic conditions persisted in several areas in Himachal Pradesh where the temperature continued to stay below freezing point in tribal areas following snowfall recently. The minimum dipped to minus 4.4 degrees at Kalpa in the tribal district of Kinnaur.
Bhuntar in Kullu district recorded a low of 4.5 degrees which was two degrees above normal while Sundernagar in Mandi district showed 5.1 degrees celsius.
The minimum temperature further fell in the capital Shimla recording 4.6 degrees, one degree below normal.
The entire Kashmir valley continued to be in the grip of cold weather conditions with Srinagar recording 1.7 degrees celsius, two degrees above normal, while the minimum further dipped to 9.6 degrees, two degrees below normal, at Jammu.
The minimum temperature hovered at 12.7 degrees, three degrees above normal in Delhi.
The Weather Office has predicted mainly sunny day in the region tomorrow with fog or mist likely in Punjab and Haryana during the next 24 hours.
