Law Day Honours For Bhardwaj, Justice Lahoti
New Delhi, Nov 24 (UNI) Law and Justice Minister Hans Raj Bhardwaj, retired Chief Justice R C Lahoti and eight others will be honoured on Law Day tomorrow for their ''unique contribution'' to the administration of justice, it was announced today.
The announcement said the honorees picked by an 11-member jury led by former Chief Justice P N Bhagwati will be presented the Law Day Awards 2006 by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at Vigyan Bhavan.
Bhardwaj has been selected for contributing to legislative and judicial reforms and Justice Lahoti for making administration of justice ''litigant-friendly,'' event sponsor Indian Council of Jurists said in a statement.
The other awardees: Attorney General Milon K Banerjee, Uttar Pradesh Advocate General SMA Kazmi, Advocates M R Prasanna, Ravi Singhania, Amarjit S Chandhiok, Satish Aggarwala, A Thiyagarajan and Nipun Gupta.
The awards are part of Law Day celebrations to commemorate the adoption of India's Constitution on November 26, 1949-- two months before it came into force.
The event, jointly organised by Indian Council of Jurists, All India Bar Association and India Legal Information Institute includes a seminar on Law, Terrorism and Development, with nine working sessions.
The presentation will be attended by Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil and Supreme Court and High Court Judges and Bar leaders, Council convenor Adish C Aggarwala said.
The selection jury included four retired Supreme Court Judges Shivraj Patil, A N Divecha, K N Saikia, Faizan Uddin, former High Court Chief Justices D S Tewatia of Calcutta and H L Agarwal of Orissa, former Delhi HC Judge J D Jain and V Narayanasamy, MP.
It also included former Central Bureau of Investigation Director Vijay Karan and All India Bar Association Chairman Aggarwala.
The seminar will discuss: -- Effectiveness of law in preventing terrorism; -- Impact of terrorism on economy; -- Media and terrorism; -- International cooperation to fight terrorism; -- Should capital punishment be mandatory for terrorist acts?; -- Human rights and terrorism; -- Role of Courts in dealing with terrorism; -- Inter-governmental coordination against terrorism; and -- Impact of hostility between nations on terrorism.
