2 day drama competition on consumer awareness opens in Dilli Haat
New Delhi, Nov 24 (UNI) A two-day drama competition to promote youth movement for creating awareness about consumer rights and existence of redressal mechanism for grievances got underway at Dilli Haat today.
In the competition teams from 12 city colleges are participating and is organised by Voluntary Organisation in Interest of Consumer Education (VOICE) and sponsored by the Department of Consumer Affairs.
Staged in the form of street plays (nukkad natak) on consumer themes, the plays take up consumer problems like fake advertisements, defective goods and unsatisfactory services.
The Department of Consumer Affairs has been undertaking various multi-media publicity programmes to generate consumer awareness and undertaking various steps in order to strengthen the consumer movement in the country.
One such measure was the scheme for creation of consumer clubs in school and colleges with an objective to develop consumer awareness and strengthen the consumer movement in the country, particularly in rural areas.
This scheme was launched in the year 2003, and since its inception, has covered 16 states and Union Territories.
The scheme has been conceptualised on the pattern of eco clubs being set up under the Ministry of Environment&Forests.
The objectives of the scheme are to mobilise youngsters by instilling the spirit of protection of consumer rights; to impart knowledge about the role of consumers in protecting their rights and to strengthen consumer movement in the country.
Consumer clubs have been set up in more than 6,000 schools in the country and in Delhi, consumer clubs have been set up in 130 schools through three voluntary consumer organisations, namely, VOICE, BINTY and South Delhi Housewives Association.
