Kolkata, Nov 23: West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee today made it clear that violation of law and order in the name of democratic movement would not be tolerated, saying the government would adopt every step to ensure peace in the state.

To a query of Opposition leader in the House Partha Chatterjee regarding the alleged September 25 police lathicharge on the local farmers and Trinamool Congress workers near the BDO office at Singur in Hooghly district, Mr Bhattacharjee said police had no option but to resort to lathicharge.

The Trinamool activists, led by party MPs and MLAs, forcibly detained several government officials at the BDO office till late night and were preventing them from discharging their duties, the Chief Minister added.

As repeated persuasions failed to yield any result, police were forced to use lathis to ward off the Trinamool workers, he informed.

Mr Bhattacharjee reiterated that the government would take every step to prevent illegal work in the name of ''Save Agricultural Land in Singur'', and averred that there was no justification of Trinamool members forcibly entering the BDO office and preventing the distribution of cheques to willing farmers.

If necessary the government would not hesitate to take similar steps, he reiterated.

To a supplementary query of CPI(M)'s Ashutosh Mukherkejee, Mr Bhattacharjee informed the House that the farmers at Singur had already willingly handed over 913 acre of land out of total 998 acre, required for the Tata's small car unit. To another supplementary query of Congress Legislature party leader Manas Bhunia, the Chief Minister made it clear that the car unit would not be stopped by force or any other means.

'' It is the government decision and it is going to implement it in toto, ''' he asserted.

To another query from RSP's Dipak Sarkar, Mr Bhattacharjee said in order to bring prosperity among the locals, the government had already formed a number of self-help groups among women and would ensure that they would be given proper scope and opportunity to supply food and necessary garments to the Tata Motor workers after the start of the plant by 2008.

Apart from this, he said the young farmers, who had given their land, would be accorded necessary training to find suitable jobs not only in the Tata Motor, but also in several ancilliary units going to come up simultaneously.

Earlier, as soon as the House met for the day, the Trianmool had brought an adjournment motion on the government land acquisition policy.

Allowing the motion for discussion, Speaker Hasim Abdul Halim said the matter would be taken up for two-hour-long discussuon imediately after the question hour.
