New Delhi, Nov 23: Activists of the Left-affiliated All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) and the Bhartiya Khet Mazdoor Union (BKMU) staged a protest march here today against the ''biased economic policies of the government.'' The march, which commenced at the Ramlila Ground, wound through Ranjit Singh Flyover, Barakhamba Road, Tolstoy Marg and culminated at Connaught Place amid tight security.

Traffic was thrown out of gear along the rally route and people faced difficulty in commuting.

The activists said the new economic policy of the Government, being implemented from the past 20 years had failed to yield any results for the poor.

They said the working masses, who form the ''backbone'' of the economy were a deprived lot.

''The economic growth which has taken place in the market has added to the wealth of the rich, who have grabbed 50 per cent of the nation's wealth while the poor just share less than 10 per cent of the income,'' AITUC said.

It said the income distribution system in India is unjust and accentuates poverty.

''The political system has failed to benefit the common masses, the poor are denied all the basic amenities,'' it added.

Criticising the Government, the Bhartiya Khet Mazdoor Union said the UPA betrayed the poor who voted for its National Common Minimum Programme.

''The Government has not yet even agreed to make a comprehensive law with the Central Fund for unorganised labour,'' it added.
