Madurai, Nov 22 (UNI) Even as the Public Works Department personnel resumed drawing surplus water from the Periyar dam today, after a weeklong silt removal and restoration work, huge quantum of the discharge continues to be drained into the Arabian sea.

Power generation, which had remained crippled since November 14, has commenced at lower camp earlier in the day with the restoration of three generators while the remaining one also was expected to be made operational by this evening.

Storage in the dam stood at 138.8 ft this morning, against the reduced' maximum level of 136 ft. While the PWD had made efforts to draw 1,100 cusecs, the rest of the surplus 5,242 cusecs is being let into downstream Kerala.

Meanwhile, major rivers in Southern Tamil Nadu are nearly flooded while Tamraparani is in spate following heavy rains in the catchment areas.

Vaigai dam in Theni district continued to receive copious inflows and the same was being discharged into the river since the level remained above 69 ft against the Full Reservoir Level (FRL) of 71 ft.

Courtrallam, the attraction for tourists, has been made out of bounds for bathing. All the waterfalls at Courtrallam were gushing with heavy inflows.

In Tirunelveli, the Tamraparani was flowing above the danger mark. People living downstream Vaigai and Tamraparani have been asked to move to safer places.
