TN Govt wants to conduct HC proceedings in Tamil
Chennai, Nov 22: The Tamil Nadu government will take appropriate steps to conduct the proceedings in Madras High Court in Tamil.
Talking to reporters here after a meeting, Chief Minister M Karunanidhi said under Article 348(2), the State government, after getting permission from the President, could take steps to conduct the High Court proceedings in regional languages.
He said the High Court proceedings were being held in English as Article 348 of the Constitution stipulated that all proceedings in High Courts and Supreme Courts should be conducted in English.
''Using, Article 348(2), the State government had decided to introduce Tamil as the legal language to conduct the proceedings in High Court. Appropriate steps in this regard would be taken,'' he added.
When pointed out that Judges from other States were serving in Madras High Court, Mr Karunanidhi said they would be exempted from it.
Asked whether conducting the proceedings in Tamil would delay the judicial process, the Chief Minister in a lighter vein said, already there had been delays when people demand the copies and documents in Tamil and Hindi languages.
