MCD to survey more roads in Delhi as commercial/mixed use

New Delhi, Nov 23 (UNI) The Standing Committee of the MCD today directed a survey for designating commercial or mixed use roads in areas other than those covered in the September 15 notification, a measure aimed at providing relief to traders in these regions who presently fall under the purview of the sealing drive.

The direction by Standing Committee Chairman Jai Kishen Sharma came even as MCD commissioner A K Nigam said there could not be any fresh notification of commercial or mixed use areas till the Supreme Court gave a final ruling on the status of the present notifications.

''A petition filed against the present set of notifications by the Delhi government is still pending before the Apex court. In such a condition, it is advisable to wait for the final decision of the Supreme Court before carrying out any fresh survey or notification,'' The commissioner said after the members opined that the MCD officials carry out a survey of commercial and mixed use roads in areas other than those covered in the September 15 notification.

However, the members, cutting across party lines, felt that there was no harm in carrying out a survey of commercial or mixed use areas till the time the court gave its ruling on the present set of notifications.

So, the chairman Jai Kishen Sharma directed that the survey report on addition set of commercial/mixed use areas be presented on the floor of the House in ten days time.

It is notable that in the earlier meeting of the Standing Committee, members had suggested that till the Supreme Court gave its final ruling in the matter, the MCD, in accordance with the powers granted to it, should carry out a survey of commercial and mixed use roads in areas other than those covered in the September 15 notification.

It is notable that the September 15 notification of 2183 roads does not cover all the areas in C and D colonies. Also, survey and notification of commercial/mixed use roads in A and B colonies, for which strict guidelines have been made in the September 7 Urban Development Ministry notification for operation of commercial units, is still to be done.
