PMLA slapped on four for carrying fake Indian notes
Chennai, Nov 20 (UNI) Officials of the Directorate of Enforcement, Chennai, have arrested four persons on the charge of carrying a consignment containing Indian currency notes to the tune of Rs 29,53,000 under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).
This is the first time in the country that PMLA, which came into effect from 2002, was registered against them, an official release said here today.
Based on the action initiated by the DRI, Chennai, Rafeeq Mohamed, a passenger from Colombo, who landed at the Anna International airport here a few days ago was held with a consignment of counterfeit Indian currency concealed in corrugated boxes.
The DRI officials arrested Rafeeq Mohamed along with two others and remanded them to judicial custody.
As a follow-up measure, the Directorate of Enforcement authorities formed a special team to probe further and achieved a breakthrough by apprehending another person Shaik Abdul Kader of West Tambaram, who admitted to the crime.
He was also remanded to judicial custody.
Meanwhile, the DRI registered another case against Bazir Ali of Puducherry, who smuggled 400 gm of narcotic substance valued Rs 40 lakh in the international grey market, the release added.
