Mayor demands Mayor-in-council on lines of Kolkata Corp

Vijayawada, Nov 20 (UNI) Vijayawada city Mayor Mallika Begum today called for the introduction of Mayor-in-council system in Andhra Pradesh as in the corporations and municipalities in Kolkata.

Ms Begum, who with Deputy Mayor and 13 corporators visited Kolkata to study the implementation of sanitation, water supply and underground drainage systems there, told newspersons here that the Chairman-in-council system was being implemented successfully there with the support of the people.

She also hailed the air-conditioned underground market in Kolkata with the latest technology like computerised car parking facility, set up at a cost of about Rs 25 crore. With the software technolgoy imported from the Netherlands, cars can be parked without the driver, she said.

She said the system was being implemented for the first time in the country and was the second in Asia under Build Operate and Transfer (BOT) basis.

She said the CPI(M) goverment in West Bengal was paying salaries to employees working in corporations and municipalities. But in Vijayawada city, salaries were being paid by the corporation.
