Violence mars civic polls in Beed, police fire 3 rounds in air

Beed, Maharashtra, Nov 19 (UNI) Violence marred the otherwise peaceful polling for the municipal elections at Beed, when police opened three rounds of fire in the air to quell the violent mob in Bhajimandai locality this evening.

District Superintendent of Police Santosh Rastogi said the police opened three rounds of fire in the air to disperse the mob comprising of two rival groups, who earlier damaged the Electronic Voting Machines (EVM) at the polling booths number 26 (1) and 26 (2) few minutes before the ending of polling process there.

The trouble started when one of the groups objected to the long que at the polling booth number 26 (1) and charged the rival group for carrying out bogus voting, the police sources said, adding that the rival group retaliated by pelting stones at them.

At least 50 people, belonging to both the groups, were detained and an offence has been registered against them, the sources added.
