Alienation biggest factor of segregation of aged persons

Itanagar, Nov 19 (UNI) Tripura's Rajiv Gandhi University Pro Vice-Chancellor Prof Tamo Mibang has called for making the best use of the old aged wisdom in the interest of humanity.

Prof Mibang had described 'alienation' as the biggest factor of the segregation of the aged persons in India.

Addressing at a seminar on 'Problems of aged and elderly indigenous communities in North East India' at North Eastern Regional Institute of Science and Technology (NERIST) here yesterday, Prof Mibang said the old people were not ready to leave their ancestral homes and leading an isolated life.

He further said education could bringing awareness among the tribal society to solve this problem.

The seminar also aimed at assessing the magnitude of the elderly persons in NE.

Highlighting this global problem, he said despite the fact that life span had increased due to better health facilities, the issue had been a cause of major concern.

Tribal values were depleting fast due to modernisation making the problem worse, NERIST director in-charge Rajendra Prasad said.

Several participants also urged the government to increase the monthly pension of the old-aged person.
