Knowledge viewed as Commodity- Thakur
Berhampur, Nov 18 (UNI) Orissa Governor Rameswar Thakur today expressed concerned over the decline in the values and knowledge being viewed as a commodity in the society.
Addressing the 15th Convocation of Berhampur University, Mr Thakur stressed the need to reorient the approach in education to meet contemporary needs without compromising the humanistic goal.
The society was becoming increasingly consumerist, he said and called upon the teaching fraternity to meet the challenges.
It was the logic of the market driven multinationals that determined today's world order, he said and urged the institutions to match the highest standards worldwide, in teaching, research, science as well as humanities.
DAE Homi Bhabha Chair Professor V S Ramamurty called upon the youth to adopt a scientific approach and never stop learning.
Berhampur University Vice Chancellor Professor Jaya Krushna Baral said the university has incorporated major changes in it's Ph.D programme by making it mandatory for candidates to pass an entrance test, complete one year of course work and pass a pre-candidacy examination before being registered for Ph. D.
The new regulations, he said had been adopted to improve the intake quality of scholars and to make research productive.
