IUML appeals to PM for positive action on Sachar Committe report

Mumbai, Nov 18 (UNI) Appealing to the Prime Minister for earliest placement of the Sachar Committee report before the Parliament, Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) national president and former MP G M Banatwalla today demanded positive action regarding reservations.

''Let not Sachar Committee report meet the fate of Dr Gopal Singh high power panel report on minorities which is consigned to the limbo of the past,'' a release by the IUML said.

''The IUML will launch a nation-wide campaign to ensure the educational and economic backwardness of the Muslims is adequately addressed'', the release added.

Lauding the Justice Sachar Committee report for its confirmation of Muslims being the most backward community in all developmental indicators and providing detailed statistical data for the same, Mr Banatwalla said, ''The Committee deserves all thanks for its work.

Though it is disappointing to learn the Committee has not recommended quotas for Muslims in its report, Justice Sachar has not ruled it out and stated it was for the government to decide this.'' ''Justice demands that the comprehensive affirmation action must include reservations to Muslims proportionate to their population.

This is not quota based on religion but is due response to the appalling backwardness of a class of citizens'', he added.

He demanded full text of the Sachar Committee report and added that IUML had, in its detailed memorandum to the Committee, submitted 25 recommendations for advancement of Muslims, including reservations for Muslims and integration of affirmative action with the planning process to provide required financial support Monitoring of 15 measures was also recommended for promotion of Urdu.
