HC Chief Justice calls for speedy disposal of cases
Barrackpore, Nov 18 (UNI) Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court Justice Vikas Sridhar Sirpurkar today called upon lawyers to maintain honesty, modesty and integrity to their profession.
'' One will be poorer if he or she was lacking or ignoring these values'', he pointed out.
Inaugurating the centenary celebration of the Barasat Bar Association here in North 24 Parganas, Justice Sripurkar said, the people of the country still had faith in the judiciary and the practioners of this profession should bear this in mind.
Expressing concern over the tardy disposal of the pending cases in the courts of the states he said, despite notification of the high court to clear all litigations by 2006, this district court alone has more than 1000 appeal cases pending.
Mr Sirpurkar also urged the leaders and members of the association to justify their presence for the interest of the litigants.
West Bengal Law minister Rabilal Moitra said that the lawyers should bear their responsibility in such a way so that poor litigants should not lose faith in the judiciary and urged upon the judiciary to dispose off the pending cases expeditiously.
He said the state had 0.41 pending cases per 1000 population and the Left Front government had plans to take the legal aid services at the village level.
Justice S P Talukdar of Calcutta High Court, Chairman of the West Bengal Bar Council Sanatan Mukhopadhyay and District Judge, North 24 Parganas, Bandana Ray were among others who spoke on the occasion.
