VRDE to introduce FICVs in 2017
Ahmednagar, Maharashtra, Nov 17 (UNI) Futuristic Infantry Combat Vehicles (FICV) will be introduced by 2017, Vehicle Research Development Establishment (VRDE) Director Dr C L Dhamejani said here today.
Dr Dhamejani told reporters the draft of the General Staff Qualitative Requirement (GSQR) has been finalised for the sanction of the FICV. ''After 6 years of trial of the technology demonstrator with users, there have been some grey areas and parameters beyond us which will need some discussion to fix.'' When asked about the parameters, he said there were constraints with the weight of 20 tonnes and the basic requirements of the vehicle, specially the active protection systems. ''We have five years to correct the prototype to meet the user requirements. The areas that have been focussed include better mobility, fire power and protection systems.'' VRDE is working closely with the Research and Development Organisation's Directorate of Combat Vehicles. They audit vehicles that are over 25 tonnes in weight, he said.
Mr Dhamejani said Russia and Israel were willing to share information to develop the FICV. A total amount of Rs 150-200 crore have been marked for its development.
To another query about robotic and unmanned vehicles, he said they were working at developing a prototype which will be useful for futuristic nuclear qnd biological warfare, the UGV's could be used for opening roads and difficult terrain.
When asked about fuel cells, he said the department was working in that area as well but it was in its infant stage.
VRDE was looking for participation from users, designers and manufacturers from the Indian Industry, to evolve a unified approach to meet the future equipment requirements of the armed forces, Mr Dhamejani said.
