Agriculture scientist dead
Barrackpore, Nov 16 (UNI) Eminent agriculture scientist Dr Tarashankar Ghosh died at his residence in Nilgunj in North 24 Parganas yesterday after protracted illness.
He was 86 and is survived by his wife, a son and three daughters.
A former director of Central Research Institute for Jute&Allied Fibres, (erstwhile Agriculture Research Institute) under Indian Council of Agriculture Research(ICAR), an advisor to the Union Ministry of Agriculture till 2004, and the Consultant of the Food&Agriculture Organisation (FAO) under the United Nations Organisation, Dr Ghosh was also regarded as the exponent of jute agriculture in the country.
He was a scientist of Mycology and served as Director of JARC (ICJC), Dhaka Mycology before taking up charge of the Nilgaunj Institute of the ICAR as Director in 1960.
Dr Ghosh, the eminent scientist had also published his papers on 'Plant Production and Protection'. His papers were incorporated in his much recognised book 'Hand Book on Jute' and published by the FAO in 1989.
Dr Ghosh also wrote in Bengali on Jute Agricultural Research under the title of 'Paat Krishi Gaveshana O Prayog'.
Agriculture scientists working with the CRIFJAF, Nilganj, rushed to his Barrackpore residence to pay their tribute to the departed scientist.
