PM, Sonia offer tributes to Pt Nehru on birth anniv

New Delhi, Nov 14: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress president Sonia Gandhi today led the nation in paying tributes to Pt Jawaharlal Nehru on his birth anniversary.

Dr Singh and Ms Gandhi paid floral tributes to the first Prime Minister of India at his 'samadhi' at Shanti Van this morning.

Others who paid floral tributes to Pt Nehru were Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil, Union Minister Subirami Reddy, Delhi Lt Governor B L Joshi, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot and former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Digvijay Singh.

A large number of school children also paid tributes to the Pt Nehru on his birth anniversary, which is observed as 'baldivas' every year.' A series of other events were also held in the capital today to mark the birth anniversary of the first Prime Minister of India.

More than 5000 children studying in municipal primary schools of Delhi presented folk dances, mass PT drills, aerobatics, yoga and physical exercises at a function held on the occasion by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi this morning.

The civic body had also made arrangements to bring 20,000 children to and fro from their schools to function site to ensure that majority of children could celebrate the birth anniversary of their beloved Chacha Nehru On the birth anniversary of Pt Nehru, the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee organised a painting competition for children.

The occasion also witnessed the NCERT film club organise children and educational films shows for children and teachers at the Chacha Nehru Bhawan.

Later in the day, the Children films Society of India has organised a festival of films for children, to be held at the capital's Siri fort auditorium till November 18.

Also inaugurated will be the tenth International Childrens Theatre Festival, being organised by the National Institute of performing arts. The festival will be held at three venues across Delhi - LTG Auditorium, Dilli Haat and PSK (Poorva Sanskritik Kendra - till November 19.
