'Bhagyalakshmi' scheme formally launched in Karnataka
Bangalore, Nov 14 (UNI) The formal launch of the State Government's 'Bhagyalakshmi' scheme to benefit new-born girl child marked Children's Day celebrations in Karnataka, today.
The scheme was launched by Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy and Deputy Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa by presenting a fixed deposit receipt for Rs 10,000 to seven-month-old Anusha of Bidadi taluk.
Under the scheme, the State Government would deposit Rs 10,000 in the name of new-born girl child, irrespective of caste and creed, and the interest accrued from it could be utilised for her education. The deposit would mature when the child attains 18 years and the money could be utilised for her higher studies or marriage.
A colourful marchfast, a joyride for a group of children from the Spastics Society of Bangalore from the city to Mysore in a Jet Airways aircraft, distribution of 'Bravery Awards', awards for children who exhibited exceptional talents in the field of sports, culture, academics and arts were organised on the day. Competitions in various fields, including painting, singing, art and cultural programmes, marked the celebration in various parts of the State.
To mark the occasion, awards were also presented to selected institutions, individuals and anganwadis for their role in child welfare.
Speaking after inaugurating 'Makkala Mela', Mr Kumaraswamy said the Government was committed to provide necessary facilities needed to run Government schools. From next year, first grade colleges would be opened in all taluk headquarters.
Mr Yediyurappa said all school going boys would be given bicyles free of cost as was done in the case of girl students in rural areas.
