Owner-worker confrontation to continue: Chakraborty

Kolkata, Nov 13 (UNI) CITU state President Shyamal Chakraborty today opposed changes in the existing labour laws and said the confrontation between workers and employees would continue to exist.

'' The confrontation between the two is bound to continue as long as law of the land is violated by employers in most of the small industrial units. But we think differences can be sorted out through dialogues and there is no need for changing the law,'' he said during an interactive meeting with the members of Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC).

Earlier, ICC President S K Bangur emphasised the need for '' bringing in flexibility '' in labour laws, productivity-linked wages and one unit one union concept.

Mr Chakraborty observed that labour problem was less experienced in big industrial houses because '' they often take care of the employees'', but the situation was different in other units where workers were regularly exploited.

Later, replying to a question, Mr Chakraborty declined to comment on the future of West Bengal IT Services Association, the first ever employees union in the sector, which will be inaugurated tomorrow.

''I can not tell right now what is the future of this union. It all depends on how much strength the union gathers,'' he said.

The formation of the Association has created ripples in the state, which is going whole hog for industrialisation, as CITU leaders are still tightlipped as to whether strike would be thrust on IT sector in West Bengal in the nationwide strike on December 14.
