Oldest anti-submarine warfare officer dead
Kochi, Nov 13 (UNI) Rear Admiral K R Nair (retd), the oldest anti-submarine warfare officer of the Indian Navy, passed away here early this morning.
He was 91.
He is survived by his wife Rajam and two children Nalina Menon and Ravi Nair.
The funeral, held at the Ravipuram crematorium with full military honours, was attended by a large gathering of serving and retired naval officers besides family members.
Born on 15 July, 1915, he joined the Royal Indian Navy (RIN) (Voluntary Reserve) in January 1941, specialised in Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) from UK in 1944 and was commissioned into RIN in August, 1946.
He was one of the rare Indian officers who saw action in World War II, having served on board, escort ships of Atlantic Convoys transiting through German U-Boat infested waters.
RAdm Nair was the first Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Eastern Naval Command from 1967-71. He retired in May 1971 and had settled down in Kochi, where he continued to take an active interest in the activities of the Southern Naval Command.
