Home Ministry mulls measures to make police more effective
New Delhi, Nov 13 (UNI) Home Minister Shivraj Patil held a high level meeting to discuss the recommendations of the Soli Sorabjee Committee on the draft of the new Police Act.
The government is considering amendments in the over 150-year old law governing the police services to make it more effective, efficient and adapted to the changed situation.
The meeting discussed in detail all the suggestions made for the afors said objective like fixed tenure of two-years for higher police officials, mechanism to prevent political interference in the police and making the force more representative.
Home Secretary V K Duggal and other senior officials of the ministry participated in the discussions. On the basis of all the reports and deliberations, the government is planning to bring a new bill in the winter session of Parliament.
Significantly, a meeting of Chief Secretaries and Director Generals of Police is to be held tomorrow to discuss the reforms.
Earlier this month, the ministry had considered the modalities to set up the National Police Mission, as envisaged by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.The Mission is also aimed at transforming the police into a modern, capable, responsive and people-friendly organisation.
