India emerges champion with five golds
Jamshedpur, Nov 11 (UNI) India emerged champion clinching eight medals including five gold overpowering defending champions Australia in the second Commonwealth Archery Championship at the J R D Tata sports complex here today.
Today was a memorable day for Indian archery, particularly for the 'Golden Girls' Dola Banerjee and Jhanu Hansda, who bagged gold in individual events of recurve and compound.
The hosts also proved their supremacy in the team's events of men's and women's recurve and women's compound to annexe gold medals but the men's compound team had to be content with a silver medal.
In the individual recurve, Mangal Singh had already bagged bronze yesterday and Manjhudha Soy got silver in the women's compound contesting against compatriot Jhanu.
In the first Commonwealth archery event in 1996, India managed to bag only one silver by Limba Ram while Australia was the champion.
Australia became runners up this time with two gold medals while New zealand managed to arab the third spot with a lone gold medal in the men's individual compound event. But despite clinching eight medals, including four silver and four bronze, England were relegated to the fourth place as they failed get a single gold.
