New Delhi, Nov 11: The Indian Air Force carried out a risky night-time evacuation of police personnel injured in an attack by the banned ULFA on their convoy in Asom last evening.

''The CRPF's DIG (Shillong) yesterday requested Eastern Air Command to help in evacuation of the wounded police personnel belonging to his own organisation as well as the Asom police,'' IAF's spokesperson here Wing Cdr Mahesh Upasani oda said adding that a Mi-17, from the helicopter unit at Mohanbari, was immediately dispatched.

The helicopter, piloted by Wing Cdr S Kundu, made a night-time landing on an unlit helipad, close to the site of the ambush, near Tinsukia on the Asom-Arunachal Pradesh border and evacuated six injured personnel and bodies of the two dead. He then flew them to Dibrugarh, where the injured were admitted to hospital, he added.

At least two CRPF jawans were killed and three injured, one of them seriously, in an explosion last evening after ULFA planted an IED bomb on the route of the force's convoy at Amarpour near Sadiya.
