New Delhi, Nov 10 (UNI) Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee today said media in India was playing a great role in sustaining and strengthening the vibrant parliamentary democratic system.

The Speaker, however, regretted that soemtimes views were sought to be projected as news. He was addressing a group of journalists from the US and Asia who were part of the Jefferson Fellowship programme of the East-West Centre, Hawaii University.

Mr Chatterjee said it was better to make use of the Edit page to express views, rather than packaging them as news.

Describing the recently launched 24-hour Lok Sabha TV channel, as one effective medium of communicating Parliament to the people, he informed the visiting journalists about the freeedom that is enjoyed by the Press in covering parliamentary activities.

According to a Lok Sabha Secretariat release, the delegation was impressed that an independent Press Advisory Committee (PAC), consisting of only the representatives of media, decides the admissibility of mediapersons into the Lok Sabha Press Gallery.

During question answer session, the Speaker admitted that there was less representation of women in Indian legislative bodies. "We wanted to hide it, because it is very miserable. We have male dominated system. It has its influence on political parties as well.

In Local Bodies we have been successfully implementing 33 per cent reservation for women, he said.
